![]() ![]() It's not about martial versus caster, it's about passive versus active flavor. If it was some kind of magical shield, then that would be passive. If a wizard was teleporting out of the way, that's pretty clearly something that would involve some action on their part. I'd say at best it depends on how it's flavored. If it was Clerics or Wizards who could take half damage on Dex saves while paralyzed, you wouldn't even consider nerfing it. Rogues do fine against direct physical damage, they have the mobility to stay away from a lot of it and uncanny dodge works wonders for the things they can't avoid.Įvery time RAW makes martials good at something, people want to homebrew it away.Īh yes, the rogue who has +9 to DEX saves, takes no damage on a success and half on a failure is not good at DEX saves if they take full damage while incapacitated, a situation that's rare enough most people have never had it occur and are learning about the RAW interaction in this thread. They're pretty bad against direct physical damage and they fall over in melee. I'm actually working on a revised Barb class right now, there's a million revised Monks out there, but nobody gives love to the Barb since people rarely play them too far past level 8, when they stop getting decent features Of course, now you're not playing a martial artist anymore, but hey, we made monk competitive!īut yeah, if I had to rank the bottom 3 classes, it'd probably be Monk at the bottom, then Barb, then Rogue. Of course, taking the build to 20, you only end up with 8 levels of Monk (The other levels being 4 Battlemaster, 4 Gloom Stalker, and 4 Assassin), so you're actually more not-monk than monk, but don't be deceived by the 4 classes, this build fuckin slaps if stealth is something your DM lets you use often. Shadow Monk 5/Fighter 1 makes an excellent ranged stealth build, since they can cast Pass Without Trace super frequently, and get a few BA attacks in there without CBE. ![]() Their position was already known.Īssuming you're willing to stretch the limits on what is considered a "Monk," Shadow Monk actually makes a fantastic ranged build in campaigns where they aren't starved for short rests. As such, when combat begins, the PCs are in marching order. The PCs - and players - do not, maybe because it is an intentional ambush or because they all dumped Wis. The DM knows combat is about to break out. Here's another - equally likely, given the information we have - interpretation of what OP said. Like, for example, PCs regularly moving their minis on the map in real-time, or PCs declaring a marching order and moving through a corridor. At risk of stating the obvious, establishing position is only necessary when the position isn't already established by some other factor. Sometimes, combat starts while you're in marching order. What would be absurd is for the PCs to teleport around just because initiative is rolled. No, it isn't, because sometimes the PCs don't have a chance to change those positions. To not give your players a chance to change from "we are in a straight line because you asked us for marching order" to "combat is starting, hmm, where would everyone be" is absurd.
